Just from your previous posts and this current one, I believe that you are what our education system needs. I know that this girl already trusted you and you helped to solidify that trust when you came through for her in getting in touch with her dad (if you could call him that). This is another reason why schools need to be extremely safe places for children where there are not only educators, but people who will be mentors, encouragers, and supporters of these kids.
I work in education and in counseling, and that is one of the basic tenants of my practice, rapport and connection with the client. If you don't have that, there is not platform on which to build a therapuetic relationship. People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. Kudos to you man, keep it up!

Sadly, for a large number of kids, the safest place they can be is at school. It's a miracle that some of them can even get to school each day with what goes on in home. For many the only decent meal they get is at school. I've been in this business a long time, and nothing surprises me anymore.
And some of us wish to close part of them. See why it might be important to keep schools in each town? How much are the kids worth? Not enough ,I guess.

Spuds, your view has as much value as anybody else, that doesn't make it right though.
I'm inclined to agree with Counts, I don't see where the two things are really related. Some would say home schooling is the most direct of having someone involved, and that would appear to be the worst case scenario here.
Look, there have been kids who had a bun life/upbringing as long as there has been kids. I know kids that I went to school with who had parents who never knew where they was. I'm sure that there are some who have had that forever. Dang by that logic, you may have less teachers so you could weed out the bad ones and have teachers who actually try to make a difference, not those who just look at it as a check.
I think, no matter what anybodys view is, the relation of a dad who is a piece of feces has little to do with consolidation and the constant attempt to relate every topic to it be that for or against is a bit extreme.
Again, thats my opinion, doesn't mean its right, doesn't mean your wrong, but to take your ball and go home, well that doesn't sound like a real solution.

I have to agree with Spuds. The single most important entity to a community/town is its school. (I didn't say "church" because most communities have more than one, if not several!) We've had school closures/consolidation on a limited basis here in Scott County. Go ask the good folks in Fairview what closing their school did to them. Dollars and cents mean nothing when weighed against the quality of life and education provided in a small school environment.

So nobody slips through the cracks at a small school? Funny how we've had quite a few 'crack slippers' at all of the small schools.
If the resources are not spread through multiple schools, are you saying that you can't have better quality at the one you have? If there are 12 good teachers in the area who really give a crap, and they are spread through the area, you have 2 at each school, maybe you hit them, maybe you don't. If you have the 12 good ones at one school, your odds of getting a good one are better, aren't they?
I'm not trying to argue consolidation on this, I think this subject was too important to lump in with petty arguments that go back and forth depending on what you think is best.
